NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte visited Macedonia and addressed parliament, where he spoke with satisfaction about Radmila Shekerinska - the Macedonian politician who now serves as his deputy in the Alliance.
"I can say that with certainty because it was my decision to appoint her," Rutte stated, emphasizing that Shekerinska is an excellent choice for the leading team at NATO. "And I am proud of that." Shekerinska was appointed to this position on November 19, 2024 and took up the role on December 2 of the same year.
Rutte highlighted Shekerinska's knowledge and experience, which are particularly valuable in addressing the security challenges in the region. The former Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister of Macedonia today holds a key position in the international security architecture.
On questions about NATO and the ongoing conflicts, Rutte was unequivocal: the Alliance is not involved in events in Iran, but will defend every member state. "NATO is not involved in events in Iran, but we will defend every member state," he said before the Macedonian parliament.
Shekerinska emphasized that NATO's goal is defensive, not aggressive - to provide security for over a billion people rather than conquering new territories. In her first interview for a Macedonian media outlet since taking up the role, she spoke about increasing defense budgets and support for the defense industry.
With this visit, Rutte confirmed Macedonia's commitment to an active contribution to regional and global security, and assessed Shekerinska's appointment as a gain for both NATO and the region.
