Oncology's 36 Million Walk Free, Bitola Without Clean Water, a Skopje Home a Luxury, Minčev on Identity

Thirty-six million that was meant to heal, and bail instead of an answer

Two former directors of the oncology clinic, accused of over 36 million euros in damage to the state budget, saw out the end of the week as free men. The criminal panel swapped their detention for property mortgages, and the prosecution did not appeal even though it could have. A mortgage returns assets to the budget, but it does not return the trust that the medicine will reach where it is needed most - the patient who has no choice but the state.

Smuggled Botox and invented matches - the system that looks the other way

The same day brought another health story: a doctor and a nurse from the Clinical Centre tried to smuggle 199 vials of Botox through a false declaration, as cosmetic samples. And in Valandovo, football federation officials are under investigation for fake clubs and invented matches worth 1.35 million denars. Different sectors, the same scheme: small holes in oversight become the template the moment no one closes them.

6,000 people near Bitola without clean water

A few hundred metres from the town sign, around 6,000 people are drinking water contaminated with faecal matter - 87 percent of samples failed. The municipality, the waterworks and the public health centre keep passing the ball to one another, and village after village stays thirsty next to water. Water is not a luxury you wait for until someone signs a document; it is the most basic thing a society owes its periphery.

A home of your own in Skopje, a luxury for an entire generation

When a square metre in central Skopje passes 3,000 euros, and a 60-square-metre flat jumps from 80,000 to over 150,000, the maths for an entire generation simply does not add up. European prices, Macedonian wages - and ever fewer people who can bridge the two. Politics dodges the question, and the young pay off someone else's loan instead of building a home of their own.

Identity, borders and neighbours who choose by the day's interest

While at home the price of a square metre is measured, in politics it is the price of identity. Minčev reminds us that identity is not defended with speeches at rallies, but with an economy and young people who stay. On the other side of the border, Radev is blocking sanctions against the Russian patriarch, while a Bulgarian foundation called off its blockade of three border crossings within two hours - after a single sentence from Sofia. When a neighbour chooses between Brussels and Moscow by the day's interest, the small countries around it pay the tax.

The world: a deal in which no one trusts anyone

The US vice-president's people were already at the airport when the US-Iran talks abruptly collapsed. A signature on paper worth exactly until the next crisis. The price of that mistrust reached us at once: oil jumped over 80 dollars. And in Iran itself, the same regime sentenced a singer to 74 lashes simply for singing without a headscarf - because a power that fears a woman's song always fears something far bigger.

The Balkans do not forget: a verdict for the parents in Belgrade

A Belgrade court convicted the parents of the boy who carried out the school massacre - accountability does not vanish just because the perpetrator was a minor. Who had access to the weapon, who watched and did not see - these are the questions that must not end up in a drawer. The same principle missing from every one of our investigations that drags on for years.

The lighter part of the day

To close, something lighter. The football World Cup opened with a Balkan casualty - England crushed Croatia, while Vardar prepares in Italy. And on a rather different field, Queen Máxima appeared in red with a four-year-old cape - proof that clothing can speak power without a single word.

If there is a thread through the heavier part of the day, it is a simple one: accountability that stops short of the very person who depends on it most. The patient, the village, the generation that cannot buy a home - all of them are waiting for someone to answer. And that very waiting, repeated long enough, becomes the most expensive bill of all.
