Anušić Satisfied: Magyar Says Greater Hungary Is History. But Is It Really?

Croatian defense minister Anušić is satisfied. Péter Magyar, the new figure in Hungarian politics, declared that historical maps of "Greater Hungary" are - history, not revisionism. "This is a completely satisfying statement from the man who will lead Hungary" - Anušić said, and you could almost hear the sound of relief from Zagreb.

So it's enough for the new boss to say "that's in my past" and the question is resolved? In the Balkans we know that historical maps have a habit of coming out of drawers precisely when you least expect it. Orbán spent years caressing "Greater Hungary" in every way possible - now that Magyar changes course, are we all supposed to forget?

A change of rhetoric is welcome, no question. But rhetoric is cheap currency in this part of the world. The question is what Magyar does when it becomes clear that historical maps have no intention of sitting quietly - because Serbian citizens who identify with "hybrid systems" are still more than just diplomatic concerns. In the Balkans this is not a surprising observation - we know how that club works.

Will he succeed? Orbán is no easy opponent, and Vučić and Fico know how to play the long game. But the very fact that someone in Budapest opened a discussion about "art" is something new. In the Balkans we're used to these things being whispered in cafes, not said in front of cameras.
