Barcelona Are Hunting Gvardiol: The Catalan Defence Is Looking for a Croatian Name Again

Barcelona are looking for a Premier League centre-back again - this time the target is named Joško Gvardiol. According to the Spanish El Partidazo de Cope, the Catalan club have put the Croatia international at the top of the summer list since the move for Alessandro Bastoni from Inter fell through.

Gvardiol is 24 and won't come cheap - even with the calculation that Manchester City are entering a transitional period with the departure of Pep Guardiola. The 2025/26 season for the Croatian was broken up by injuries and a lack of regular minutes, which makes him open to a transfer conversation.

What does Barcelona offer? A partner for Pau Cubarsí under Hansi Flick, a system that suits a left-footed defender with offensive instincts. What keeps him in Manchester? With John Stones and Nathan Aké on the way out, City would offer him the role of defensive leader at a club building its next cycle from zero.

For a Balkan audience this is one of those stories that move along without a referee's whistle - Gvardiol is the biggest name Croatia has produced in defence since Dejan Lovren. If he goes to Barcelona, you'll be watching another Balkan name in a Camp Nou shirt. If he stays - the 2026/27 season will be his real proving ground under a new manager.
