Demi Moore at 63 stepped onto the red carpet at Cannes and did something half the fashion press did not expect: hair down past her waist, a soft wave effect, and a shine that reacts to light like the still surface of a lake. The message was that long hair is not just for twenty-year-olds. The question stylists were asking themselves afterwards: what exactly makes hair look "luxurious"?
Marc Carol Brughera, director of the Frame Hair Club salon in Barcelona, gives the answer without jargon. "Hair feels luxurious when it reflects light evenly." That doesn't sound like much - but it changes the whole conversation. Hair with a closed cuticle, no frizz, with movement and well-worked colour produces an instant impression of health and care. The eye reads that as "vitality", and then the whole face looks fresher.
The cut is often underestimated. Brughera recommends avoiding overly thinned or chopped styles - they visually reduce density and remove weight. Hair carrying sophistication needs to move well, hold visual weight, react with light. And here comes the second key thing: length. Ultra-long styles are returning, especially with soft "mermaid" waves and a "glossy" finish.
Why is the "glossy" shine the new currency? Because it visually rejuvenates. After 50, hair loses some of its hydration, density and natural shine. Restoring reflection transforms the whole look more than we think. "A glossy finish brings light to the face and visually softens the lines. It creates an optical effect of greater density and health - two things we automatically associate with youth." Shine works almost as an invisible highlighter.
The trend is already moving beyond Cannes. Aitana at Spanish concerts, Lola Indigo with a slightly more daring mermaid variant, Alejandra Pereira with an effortless version - all have embraced this aesthetic. Spanish fashion circles are following the same line, which is a sign this is not a seasonal fad but a road map for the coming year.
What is the mistake women most commonly make? They focus only on styling and forget the condition of the fibre. Thinned hair, burnt by heat or overloaded with products, cannot reflect the light. The solution: hydration, light nutrition and closing the cuticle. Professional glossy treatments, deep hydration, light serums. And - this is specific to summer - protection from sun, heat and chlorine. Thermal protectors, solar formulas for hair, even a simple hat. Hair that shines in May won't shine in September unless you take care of it in between.
