Heading to Greece? We have a complete guide - live border, beaches, prices and documents.
Anyone who drives to Greece knows the scene: you leave early to „beat the queue", and at Bogorodica a line of cars sits there not moving. The problem is that early morning is not the best time at all - it is the worst.
The forecast on our Greece holiday guide shows it in black and white. For this Saturday, at Bogorodica heading into Greece, 274 minutes of waiting are predicted at 07:00. That is more than four and a half hours in the car before you reach the first beach.
The same Saturday, the same border, at 19:00: thirteen minutes.
The curve repeats every day for the next seven. The peak lands between 06:00 and 07:00, when everyone sets off at the same time because everyone thinks the same way. Afternoons and evenings are empty. Saturday and Sunday at the start of August are the heaviest days of the whole week, which makes sense - it is the first August weekend, the peak of the Greek season.
There is no way to shorten the wait once you are already in the queue. The only thing you can change is the hour you leave, and that gets decided at home, the day before.
The cameras at the three crossings - Bogorodica, Medzitlija and Star Dojran - run live, with the clock burned into the picture itself. It is not an archive and not a recording: you see what is on the road at the moment you open it.
Above the cameras sits an hourly forecast for each of the next seven days. You pick the day you are travelling and get a prediction for every hour, colour-coded by severity - clear, busy, or heavily congested. The forecast comes from Nakordoni.eu, not from our own guesswork.
On top of that, anyone at the border can report how long they waited, and those reports feed into the number the next drivers see. The more people report, the more accurate it gets.
Open the guide before you get in the car, not while you are stuck in the queue. Look at the day you are travelling, find the hour when the curve drops, and leave then. The difference between a good and a bad hour at the same border is bigger than the difference between two different crossings.
