The wedding took place on 22 May on Little Pipe Cay, a private island in the Bahamas, in a small chapel, with fewer than twenty guests. Donald Trump Jr and Bettina Anderson married far from any cameras, and the photographs have only been published now - almost two and a half months later.
That in itself is a data point. A family that lives off being in front of lenses chose a ceremony with nobody there to film it. The island was picked not for its exclusivity but because the bride spent her childhood summers there. The service was led by her brother-in-law, Brad McPherson.
The dress is the work of the house Safiyaa and its creative director Daniela Karnuts - satin, cut on the bias, with a minimalism every fashion writer immediately compared to Carolyn Bessette's 1996 wedding dress. Karnuts rejects the comparison and says the aim was an authentically unique design for Bettina, not a repetition of somebody else's icon. The bride took part in the whole process and asked for a mesh covering rather than a classic veil.
The most interesting detail appears in none of the photographs. Inside the dress, hand-embroidered, is a line from the Song of Songs: „I have found the love of my life.“ None of the guests knew it was there. That is the opposite of everything this surname usually does with symbols - a message written not to be read.
The second detail is heavier. In her bouquet the bride carried a locket with photographs of her late father, the banker Harry Loy Anderson Jr. It is a custom every wedding around here knows when somebody is missing - an object carried so that someone who cannot take their seat is still seated.
For the reception she changed into a made-to-measure two-piece from the same house, with a V-neckline top and a skirt with geometric embroidery. The first dance was to an Elvis Presley ballad, and later on the floor she danced with her sisters-in-law Tiffany and Ivanka.
In fashion terms, this confirms that bias-cut satin is back and that brides now fear excess more than they fear simplicity. The story around it, though, is the part that needs no translation here: a wedding is not remembered for the number of guests, but for who was missing from it.
