A Hand Grenade, Two Pistols and 240 Bullets in a Skopje Man's Home - Plus a Motorbike Key That, Prosecutors Say, Was Used in a Murder

During a search of a 33-year-old Skopje man's home, police found an arsenal that ordinary citizens are banned from owning. An M75 hand grenade, packed with metal balls around two millimetres in diameter, designed for a shrapnel effect. A Crvena Zastava pistol, 7.65 mm calibre, with a seven-round magazine. A Beretta pistol, with a six-round magazine. A total of 240 rounds of various calibres. And, to complete the set, around seven grams of marijuana.

But the most important item from the search doesn't fire. Police also found a motorbike key in the flat. According to the Skopje Basic Public Prosecutor's Office, there is operational intelligence that it was used in committing a murder. Which murder, when it happened and what the suspect's link to it is - the prosecution isn't saying for now.

An order to open an investigation has been issued against the 33-year-old for unauthorised manufacturing, possession, brokering and trafficking of weapons or explosive substances, and for unauthorised production and distribution of narcotic drugs. The prosecutor asked the court for the strictest measure - detention - citing a flight risk and the possibility that the suspect could go on committing crimes.

A hand grenade in a flat in the capital is not a decoration. It is built for a shrapnel effect, to injure everything around it. How many flats like this are there across Skopje that nobody has entered, because nobody turned up with a search warrant? And when will we find out which murder that motorbike key unlocks?
