Kylie Minogue for the First Time on Her Second Cancer: She Hid It, She Was Terrified - and a Message Worth More Than a Song

At 58 and with over 80 million records sold behind her, Kylie Minogue has nothing left to prove. And that's exactly why her decision to speak openly - about the men who marked her life and about two battles with cancer - is worth more than any new song.

Minogue spoke openly for the first time about her second case of breast cancer, diagnosed in early 2021, which she managed to keep secret - unlike the first, in 2005, when she had to cancel an entire tour and her Glastonbury appearance. „I had a second diagnosis in early 2021. I managed to hide it, not like the first time. I was very afraid of what was ahead of me," she says. „Luckily, I survived. Again."

Her message isn't sentimental, but practical: „Someone probably needs exactly this little reminder to go get checked. Early detection makes an enormous difference." That's a sentence worth more than all the pink ribbons put together - because it comes from someone who's been through it twice.

In the documentary, she also looks back on the relationships that shaped her. Jason Donovan, her co-star from the series „Neighbours," admits he thought they'd marry and have children. And Michael Hutchence, the frontman of INXS, transformed her from an innocent teenager into a sophisticated pop diva - his suicide in 1997 marked her deeply. „When I think of Michael and talk about him, I can often feel his presence," Minogue says.

But even when she opens up, she knows where the line is: „I want to keep the mysterious part. I'm not one of those who say everything." Maybe that's the real secret of four decades at the top - to give enough for people to feel you're close, while keeping enough to stay out of reach.
