Michael Jackson died more than 17 years ago, and his estate hasn't melted away since. His children, according to a new lawsuit filed in a Los Angeles court, have seen nothing of it in all that time. Paris Jackson is now asking for 600 million dollars - for herself and for her brothers Prince and Bigi.
According to the lawsuit, the family trust set up to receive Michael's inheritance is empty. Jackson wanted the children to receive the money when they turned 21 - and all three are already past that age. The executor of the will, John Branca, never filed a distribution plan, Paris claims, and has been dragging out the inheritance for years.
Paris's lawyers also offer numbers. The estate, they say, hasn't shrunk at all: the sale of its stake in EMI Music Publishing in 2018 alone brought in almost 300 million dollars, and the Neverland ranch another 22 million. If the money exists - and the numbers say it does - why is the children's trust empty?
On the other side, the estate's representatives deny all the allegations. They explain the delayed payouts with legal disputes that are still ongoing, penalties and taxes, and insist the executor has withheld or cut nothing from anyone.
The scene is as old as great fortunes themselves: a celebrity leaves millions, and between the heirs and the money stands an executor with a signature and legal disputes that never end. Who in the Balkans hasn't heard of an inheritance case dragging on for years while the heirs wait at the courthouse door?
Paris, Prince and Bigi are long past being the children from the front pages - they are adults with their own lawyers. The Los Angeles court will now have to answer a simple question: when will Michael Jackson's money finally reach the people he left it to?
