When a club's president promises a „galactico" right before an election, it's worth reading the fine print too. Florentino Perez announced a plan for a 150 million euro transfer for a star „in the style of Cristiano Ronaldo or Kaká" - a move with which he wants to cut off the campaign of rival Enrique Riquelme ahead of the presidential election at Real Madrid.
The statement came on the show „Horizonte," where Perez dismissed speculation about Erling Haaland with one sentence: „As for Haaland, everyone denies it, so it must be a bluff." Instead, he announced that an official move for a star from a Champions League club would be made on Tuesday, with a contract that would exceed any sum in the club's history.
„The player will most likely be from midfield down - it's not Haaland," Perez added, ruling out targets from the Premier League. And here the real guessing game begins. If the target is a midfielder and comes from a Champions League club, eyes naturally turn to Paris Saint-Germain and its João Neves and Vitinha.
Both offer exactly what Real lacked after the departure of Toni Kroos - control, resistance to pressing, and progressive passing. Neves works as the engine in midfield, while Vitinha provides technical security and quick ball movement under pressure. Either of them would fit into José Mourinho's system.
Perez also pointed out that the club is worth around 10 billion euros and remains the most expensive in world football - figures that sound more convincing than any pre-election promise. Because one thing is certain: Perez needs the votes first, and the star who brings them comes as a convenient argument. The fans are now waiting for Tuesday. Whether they'll get a transfer or just a pre-election spectacle - the signature will show, not the announcement.
