Five million euros vanished in Dracevo because nobody was guarding it

Two power transformers, thirty tonnes each, tipped over. The oil drained out. The copper windings and the rails carried away. The damage at the Dracevo traction substation runs to about five million euros, and the facility is completely dead. Deputy Prime Minister Nikoloski came out with an assurance that the city train starts on 1 September, exactly as promised. That is what a citizen wants to hear. The question no statement touches is a different one: how does a piece of critical infrastructure, at a known location between two railway stations, end up with no physical security, no working camera surveillance and no alarm that goes off while somebody flips thirty tonnes of steel? That job does not get done with pliers and a bag. It takes machinery and it takes time. Someone calculated that guarding the place cost too much, and now five million will be spent to get back something we already owned.

Ohrid got another five years, and 456 demolition orders sit unenforced

UNESCO kept Ohrid off the blacklist, which officially counts as a diplomatic win. The draft decision, though, proposed putting it on the endangered list, and the numbers behind that draft are 4,847 illegal buildings and 456 demolition orders, not one of which has been carried out. Five years is not a prize, it is a deadline. Same pattern as Dracevo: the paperwork exists, the signatures exist, the enforcement does not.

Foam from the Lepenec and a drone that found nobody

White foam was pouring from the Lepenec into the Vardar. Inspectors were on site within the hour, took samples, sent up a drone. A day later the river is clean, and nobody will say what the substance was or who released it. Fast response with no result is its own genre in Macedonian administration: every step done by protocol, and no one answerable at the end of it.

Water that has not been drinkable for a decade

The crisis in Gostivar is easing, but the water still cannot be used even for washing, and roughly 4,000 people have fallen ill. At the hospital in Leshok, test results flagging unsafe water had been arriving for years. That is not an incident. That is a decision repeated for ten years running.

Winds of 134 km/h and a hospital with no orthopaedics

A million denars is needed for two roofs in Shtip, the orthopaedics ward is out of service, and patients with fractures are being sent to other centres. Probishtip logged over 100 damage claims. In Skopje the interior ministry reported 189 fallen trees, while the count on the ground is three times that, with around 80 at the Butel cemetery alone. Some of those trees will become benches on Vodno, and some will heat vulnerable households - the only story of the day in which something broken gets a second use.

Twelve fires in a single day

The crisis management centre closed the daily tally at twelve fires, three still burning, in Probishtip, Kumanovo and Petrovec. Wheat, vineyards and pine forest went up, from Mogila to Gevgelija. Europe on the same day counts 267,000 evacuated from Bordeaux to Madrid, with Spain declaring a national emergency. The cruellest detail comes from there: eight firefighting helicopters are sitting grounded because their spare parts are Russian, and Madrid never filed a single request for an exemption.

A bribe taken from a man living on welfare

A counter clerk at the employment centre in Prilep was asking for 6,000 denars a month from a man surviving on guaranteed minimum assistance, and for three months it worked. Half the aid went out to keep the other half coming in. This is not a large figure in anybody's budget, but it is the exact measure of how low the entry price to corruption drops when nobody is watching.

A wage of 49,544 denars against a basket of 68,743

The average wage covers 72 percent of the union basket, and two minimum wages together fall 16,651 denars short of the calculated minimum for a family of four. The median wage, the number that would say the most about how the average worker actually lives, has not been published at all. On the Kicevo - Ohrid motorway, meanwhile, three official sources give three different figures, and a six-kilometre discrepancy in the stated length remains unexplained.

Arguing about the protocols on Facebook

The former and the current foreign minister are trading posts on Facebook about the negotiating framework with Bulgaria, and nobody is showing the document. Instead of a legal opinion, the argument became the election result in Chair. When two ministers debate state business in the comments, what is missing is not the tone. It is the text.

Vardar at 22 from 22 at home

Outside all of this, Vardar is the only club in Europe with a perfect home record: 22 matches, 22 wins. Not Barcelona, not Veszprem. Worth writing down on a day when very little else held up to scrutiny.

What ties the heavier part of the day together is not the theft, or the wind, or the fire. It is that the orders, the findings and the samples all existed before the event, while the enforcement turns up after it, usually with a bill running into the millions.
