More oil does not mean healthier hair: a hairdresser explains how the care product starts destroying it

There is a logic we all apply that holds for no cosmetic product whatsoever: if a little helps, more will help more. With hair oil that logic does not work. Luciano Cañete, a hairdresser and salon owner, puts it plainly: „The big mistake is thinking that the more oil on the hair, the greater the repair. It does not work like that.”

Excess oil does not heal hair - it weighs it down, makes it greasy and makes the next wash harder. So you wash longer, with more shampoo, more aggressively, and the hair comes out drier than it started. That is the loop most people never see: the product meant to protect it made you scrub harder.

The rule is modest. A small amount, on the mid-lengths and ends only, and only if the hair actually needs it. The ends are the oldest piece of hair on your head - there are no working oil glands out there, which is why that is where the dryness lives. The roots have plenty of their own.

Elena Rodero, a pharmacist and hair specialist, explains why this matters at all: when hair loses its natural protection it becomes more brittle and breaks more easily. So the goal is not shine in a photograph - it is a strand that does not snap when you comb it.

Reverse washing - the order nobody teaches

Vilma Sortino, a hair health specialist, describes a technique she calls reverse washing, and the point is literally to change the order. First wet the hair and apply the mask or conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends, without touching the scalp. Then apply shampoo directly to the scalp and massage. Finally rinse both products out together.

Why it works: the scalp gets cleaned, but the ends stay wrapped in hydration instead of taking the shampoo head-on. Sortino says this establishes a balance between cleansing and hydration - two things we usually set against each other.

The rest is boring but true. Straightener and hairdryer on low heat and as rarely as possible. A mask once or twice a week. And if you want deeper care, apply the mask to dry hair before washing, not after.

The cosmetics industry sells products, not sequence. And the sequence is free.
