A rented flat is a home you live in, but aren't allowed to change - at least not permanently. A hole in the wall, a cracked tile or a dark colour on the door easily become a reason for a fight with the owner and a lost deposit. Luckily, there are ways to transform the space completely while keeping everything reversible to its original state. Here are about a dozen solutions that need neither a handyman nor permission.
First and most powerful - peel-and-stick wallpaper. Patterned or in a single colour, it goes on easily and comes off without a trace, ideal for one wall in the living room or bedroom that will become the focus of the space. Right next to it come large rugs: they hide an unattractive floor, soften the space and can divide an open plan into zones without a single nail.
Lighting is the next secret weapon. With no installation at all, with floor and table lamps and with peel-and-stick LED strips, the atmosphere shifts from cold to warm. Warm light gives a sense of comfort that no wall colour can create on its own. And while we're on small swaps - changing the handles on kitchen units and furniture, in black, brass or steel, rejuvenates the whole space. Just one rule: keep the originals so you can put them back when you move out.
For those who want art on the wall without holes, the solution is simple - leaning frames. Pictures and posters leaned against a shelf, furniture or directly on the floor, in a mix of different sizes, look dynamic and change whenever you like. The same „no drilling" principle applies to large floor mirrors, which multiply the space, bring back light and hide unsightly parts of the wall.
The bathroom and kitchen, usually the most problematic in a rented flat, are saved by peel-and-stick tile vinyls - resistant to moisture and heat, with hydraulic patterns, a marble effect or a plain colour, which come off without damaging the surface beneath them. Cheap, fast and fully reversible.
Textiles make a difference you can feel. A well-fitted sofa cover, in natural or durable blended fabrics, can change the whole tone of a room, and can be swapped by the season. Greenery, meanwhile, adds volume and freshness - large potted plants like a monstera, a ficus or a kentia in empty corners instantly bring a space to life.
For windows there's a solution without drilling into the wall too: telescopic curtain rods that wedge between two walls or into the window frame, in a black, white, chrome or wooden finish, to manage privacy and light. And when nothing else fits the budget - simply rearranging the existing furniture is the cheapest way to rethink a space.
One warning at the end. There are things you must not do without the owner's consent - changing the floor even with „removable" systems, painting in dark tones, painting the door or any permanent alterations. The rule is simple: before anything permanent, ask the landlord. Everything else - wallpaper, rugs, lamps, covers and plants - is your right, to make the home truly yours, at least while you're there.
