The autumn 2026 collections are asking us to wear purple with red. That is not a typo. The fashion houses Alaia and Dior have already worked the mustard shade into their collections, and the international fashion press is naming precisely the red-purple pairing as one of the season's strong duos.

The logic behind it is more interesting than the colour itself. September is the month when nothing is either summer or autumn, and instead of solving that by replacing an entire wardrobe, stylists solve it by mixing. Turquoise and pastel tones carry over into the between-season, while burgundy remains one of the colours of the season. They do not cancel each other out - they complement.

Green with blue: the easiest way in

This is the freshest and most wearable of the five. Blue brings light, green brings a natural tone that eases you into autumn. It works in every direction - a basic blue shirt with green trousers, a green jumper over a blue shirt, or just an accessory in one of the two colours.

Mustard with brown: autumn picks up speed

Butter yellow has led for several seasons, but the mustard tone is what is growing now. Its advantage is that it brings colour without the result looking like summer. Brown grounds it and gives it a sophisticated tone. A mustard jumper with brown trousers, or a chocolate brown bag with a head-to-toe mustard outfit.

Purple with red: the rule being broken

This is the boldest of the five and it is getting the most space this season. It moves entirely away from predictable autumn pairings and lines up with the craze for the powerful eighties look. Aubergine is one of the key colours of the season, and playing with different intensities of both purple and red produces combinations far more sophisticated than it sounds at first. A purple jumper with a red skirt, or an all-purple outfit with red shoes.

Olive with garnet: the most elegant pair

This one fits the quiet luxury aesthetic best. Olive functions almost as a neutral, while garnet adds depth. A much more relaxed combination than the previous one, with the same potential. An olive blazer with garnet trousers, or burgundy loafers - which are trending this season - with a loose olive dress.

Blue with red: it does not go unnoticed

This one is purely visual. Blue brings calm, red breaks the whole thing open. This is where what the season calls "unexpected red" comes in - you take any red piece and add it to an outfit that looks completely basic. A pale blue outfit, and suddenly a red jumper over it. Or a thin blue jumper with a red midi skirt.

What is valuable here is not the list of colours but the fact that September no longer asks us to give up colour. It only asks us to combine it differently - and that is a difference that costs nothing, if the wardrobe is already at home.
