Bribes at the Inspectorate and Customs, the Laskarci verdict quashed, 4.8 million for a celebration

Three bribery cases in one day, and none of them small

The day opened with three separate cases of money demanded or taken, all inside institutions whose job is to check on everyone else. At the trial of the former head of the State Agricultural Inspectorate, the man who reported him took the stand: a company owner from Delchevo who says he kept getting surprise inspections until a demand arrived through a middleman for 100,000 euros, so his fertiliser trucks could clear customs. Police had earlier found 50,000 marked euros in the director's car. The defence says a freight forwarder asked for the money, not him. The two versions differ on who did it, not on how it works: a scheme like this needs a system where an inspection can be swung like a club.

The same day, a deputy director at the Customs Administration was caught with 17,500 marked euros for intervening in two proceedings - no signature, no jurisdiction, just influence. And the tender for the 35th independence anniversary celebration ran for five days, drew exactly one bidder, and produced a contract worth 4.8 million euros. The chairman of the commission that assessed that single bid later turns up as the arranger for a concert in the very same programme. The government's line is that citizens paid nothing from the budget. It is the procedure that does not survive a close reading.

Laskarci goes back to zero after seven and a half years

The Supreme Court has quashed the final verdict in the Laskarci bus crash, which killed 16 people. The case returns to first instance over procedural failings, and the convicted men - among them the operator's owner and the driver - have no legal basis to keep serving their sentences and are walking out of prison. The families of the dead will sit through the same expert testimony seven and a half years on. A court has every right to correct its own mistake; the question nobody is asking out loud is who made it, and whether anyone answers at all for the years lost.

A few hours apart, the lead defendant in the "Puls" fire walked out of detention because the deadline expired, and a year and a half on there is still no final conviction. The parents' association from Kochani put it most briefly: our children had no deadline.

A Norwegian court did the same, over a four-year sentence

Quashing a verdict is not our specialty alone, as Norway's Court of Appeal showed by accepting the appeal in full a day after King Harald V's funeral. A four-year prison sentence goes back for retrial, which will run for the next four weeks. The difference is in the weight of what gets voided - and in how long the system had already held the case.

One bank fewer to compare against, and a deadline for state flats

After Ohridska Banka, Austria's Sparkasse has bid for 100 percent of UNI Banka's shares at 126.38 euros apiece. The approvals come from Podgorica, Belgrade and Frankfurt. The market gains another big player, and the customer loses one more reference point when comparing offers.

Meanwhile, amendments to the Housing Act set a deadline of end-2027 for state-flat tenants to file their applications, with forced eviction for those who do not. Some of the people under that threat previously had no right to apply at all - meaning the law first shut the door on them, and now hands them a deadline to walk through it.

And the state has yet to compile a Catalogue of Mineral Resources to establish what is actually under our feet. Countries that know what they own negotiate. The rest sign.

Skopje promises an arena by 2028, while the fever already counts eight dead

The Universal Hall is meant to be finished by 2028, when Skopje is European Capital of Culture - this time the deadline is being presented as a date, not a suggestion. The city has a long history of buildings that close for renovation and stay closed, so the promise will only be worth measuring in 2028.

More urgent is the number already here: 58 West Nile fever cases this year, with eight dead - more than the previous 15 years combined. There is no specific cure, and prevention happens in May, not September.

Locally, the unofficial crossing at Bit Pazar is getting a push-button traffic light after seven months of debate in which nobody raised the question of why the footbridge above the street is closed. And the Kisela Voda council wants security for its own sessions, after a councillor, the council president and the mayor ended up trading accusations.

The war reached the Caspian, the surveillance reached Slovenia

Ukrainian drones set port infrastructure alight in Makhachkala, in Dagestan - the furthest point the war has touched geographically. Moscow claims it downed 448 drones over 14 regions in 12 hours; that figure is Russian and reads accordingly. In China, a fire on a cargo ship under repair in the port of Qingdao took 20 lives, with five of the 42 people aboard still missing. The flag is Liberian, the shipyard Chinese, and the accountability spread across three jurisdictions.

In the region, Croatia was a client of an Israeli firm whose tool mapped critics of Slovenia's nuclear plant - you mark an area on a map and get a list of everyone who posted from it. Among the targets: members of Greenpeace Slovenia. And in Serbia, Kesic's satirical show was cancelled after 13 years, two months before an election, on the grounds that production is expensive.

A theft from the company that verifies documents

The most uncomfortable tech story of the day: over 150 million driving licences were stolen from a firm whose business is confirming whether a document is genuine. The hackers were inside for a full year, and the company only confirmed it after a journalist found his own licence on the dark web. In parallel, Chinese labs extracted 200 million exchanges from Claude, and the largest of the five campaigns got through on a request for a Japanese translation.

The lighter end of the day

Vardar lost 33:31 in Kassel, but played like a side with something to chase in the Champions League - a two-goal away defeat is no reason for grim conclusions. Meanwhile Chelsea is up for sale again and Messi is buying a Spanish club, and the NBA is in talks to buy the EuroLeague. Football and basketball had a day where ownership was more interesting than the score.

If there is a common line running through today, it is not in the sport. In the heavier half, the same mechanism showed up three times: someone with authority charges for the thing they are supposed to check for free, and when the system has to answer for it, it usually sends the case back to the start.
