A deputy director caught with marked cash, and it was a citizen who opened the case

Seven and a half thousand euros to keep an already-signed contract from being cancelled, then ten thousand more for a procedure under appeal. A total of 17,500 euros, and the deputy director at the Customs Administration was caught with the marked money in his hand. The important detail isn't the sum, it's who opened the case: a citizen who went and reported it. Not internal control, not an audit, not a whistleblower system. If one man could spend months asking for money on contracts that were already signed, then his influence wasn't invented - it was real, and somebody had to have seen it.

The police walked into their own house

Raids at 32 locations in Skopje, including offices inside the Ministry of the Interior itself. Around 25 people are under suspicion in a scheme where someone reports losing an ordinary driving licence, and when the replacement is issued an Interior Ministry employee quietly adds categories C and D - truck and bus. No exam. No check. A licence that is formally, completely valid. Among those caught up in it are people who have driven buses and heavy goods vehicles on licences like these, inside the country and beyond it. The operation is good news because it means somebody on the inside spoke up. It is also an admission - if an official could add categories to a register for years with no oversight, the problem is not one employee.

Justice that arrives after the sentence has been served

The Supreme Court quashed the second-instance verdict over the Laskarci bus crash and both verdicts against Stevcho Jakimovski. Jakimovski had already served two thirds of his one-year sentence when it was established that the verdict wasn't sound. Worse, the quashing so far exists only as a spoken decision: the Criminal and Appellate courts still haven't received the written reasoning, so they can't act and release people serving sentences under verdicts that no longer exist. People are sitting in prison because a document hasn't been written. For the Laskarci families, seven years after the crash, the process starts from the beginning.

More than 20 shops burned down, and there is still no cause

At 3:20 after midnight, a commercial building on Indira Gandhi street in Shuto Orizari caught fire. Fifteen firefighters and six vehicles worked for three and a half hours; by morning more than 20 shops had been reduced to ash. Nobody was hurt and the fire didn't spread - that is down directly to the crews who went in during the night. The detail about how long the intervention lasted came from the Crisis Management Centre in answer to a reporter's question, not in a press release. Every shop belonged to a single owner and was rented out to dozens of traders. The question nobody asked officially is what fire protection the building had, and who signed off on it.

One summer outstripped the entire previous decade and a half

Fifty-eight cases and eight deaths from West Nile fever in a single summer, against 54 cases and 5 deaths for the whole period from 2011 to 2025. MP Sanja Lukarevska asked whether there is any protocol for school yards in municipalities with a declared epidemic. Minister Klekovski replied that the youngest patient was 25 and that pupils are not a risk group. The argument is epidemiologically correct, but it answers a question nobody asked - clearing standing water from a school yard isn't a measure for pupils, it's a measure to cut the mosquito population in a neighbourhood where the over-60s the minister called highest-risk also live. The yard is not sealed off from the neighbourhood.

Promises with a route, but no date

The same pattern repeats where there is neither an investigation nor a fire. A new 3.5-kilometre trunk road towards Blace and Kosovo has a route, a presentation and agreement that it's needed - but no date, no deadline and no published value for the investment. The illegal dump in Novo Lisiche is to become a 71,000-square-metre park on a promise made back in 2021, and five years on the dump is still a dump. By contrast, the reconstruction of 1,567 square metres of Skopje's Old Bazaar for over 28 million denars is the first thorough job in more than five decades - the most visited historic space in Skopje waited fifty years for someone to replace the pipe under the cobblestones.

The protection people build themselves

Where the institution is late, people improvise their own guarantee. Bitola's beekeepers are selling directly at Magnolija for two days - when you buy honey from a man who tells you which village it came from, you bypass the entire trade that diluted trust in domestic honey. The question is what happens on the other 363 days. Macedonian ruby, meanwhile, is getting a certificate and a register, so a stone sold as ours will have to carry proof of origin. And eighty new pupils at the music school in Prilep is a figure that sounds nearly impossible in a town with a demographic problem - the question no ceremony answers is whether there are enough instruments and teachers for them.

The same question with a different passport

In Zagreb and Belgrade the day looked familiar. A Croatian economist was arrested in the US after Hanfa had warned about him back home - the domestic regulator found the irregularities first, the story then stalled, and it took crossing a border for the same findings to become criminal charges. In Belgrade, people took to the streets after a Lisbon-based fund axed a satirical show that cost 500,000 euros a year. Nobody banned anything. The line item simply stopped paying for itself.

A war announced in advance

Putin drew a line: European soldiers in Ukraine means war with Russia, said in the same breath as the assurance that Russia doesn't want war with Europe. Lukashenko raised combat readiness with an army of 50,000 sitting between Russia's 1.5 million and Poland's 220,000. Tusk announced that Poland is building its own satellites because Europe's security must not depend on one man's whims - three years ago the Polish army waited twenty days for satellite imagery. Kyiv recalled its special forces from leave in under 12 hours ahead of the battle at Dobropillia. And Saudi Arabia shut a key pipeline after a drone attack, sending oil past 100 dollars a barrel, with five institutions declining to comment.

Sport, and one piece of advice nobody can sell you

From the lighter side of the day: HC Ohrid defends its European title in a competition with a record 38 teams, while Vardar lost in Kassel 33:31. MZT defends its title from 3 October, and Rabotnichki cut its debt by 70 percent ahead of its 80th birthday. Stole Dimitrievski was among the better players again, but Valencia have one point after five rounds. And something worth more than half a gym membership: one extra hour of sleep a day meant 270 fewer calories, because the decision you make in front of the fridge is made hours earlier - when you decide what time to go to bed.

The day didn't leave behind a single institution that came forward with its own problem. Customs was opened up by a citizen, the Interior Ministry by its own police, the judiciary by a higher court seven years on. That isn't a coincidence of scheduling - it is a description of how the system works when nobody is watching.
