Pamela Anderson made her debut at the Venice festival at 59, and what everyone noticed was not the gown. It was the face. Not one layer of makeup, visible freckles, the marks time leaves - on a red carpet where the aesthetic treatment industry spends more than some of the films screened there.

The decision is not new. Anderson has gone without makeup for three years now, since the end of 2023, and the explanation is her own: "I did it for myself, just to say that I am good enough as I am." You rarely come across a sentence out of Hollywood that was not written by a PR agency.

For the full picture, the rest was not modest. A canary yellow gown with a bardot neckline and a train, a diamond collar, matching earrings, platinum hair gathered into an Italian chignon with a side strand and a wave in the texture. The only thing on her face was a soft pink shade on the lips and, most likely, brown mascara for a gentler effect.

That is what matters in the whole story. This is not a rejection of aesthetics, but a change in where aesthetics sit. The gown, the jewellery, the hair - all present. What has been removed is the part of a woman's face the industry treats as a defect to be fixed.

In Venice she presented Kornel Mundruczo's film "Place to be", in which she stars alongside 83-year-old Ellen Burstyn and Taika Waititi. It is her first film at the Mostra. At the amfAR gala she received an award and spoke there about the hepatitis C she contracted in the nineties, which at the time she experienced as a death sentence. She has been free of the virus since 2015.

Which is why the picture from Venice is not about makeup. One 59-year-old face, two actresses - one of them 83 - and one film. For an industry that spent decades selling Pamela Anderson as a poster rather than an actress, that is a bigger turnaround than any transformation.
