Macedonian ruby gets a certificate and a register: a stone sold as ours will have to carry proof of origin

The Macedonian ruby is getting something that far better-selling Macedonian products do not have - a system proving it is what it says it is. A Commission for the Macedonian Ruby has been formed, and it will work on setting up certification and traceability: where it was mined, who processed it and how it reached the point of sale.

The working meeting at the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources was led by Minister Sanja Bozinovska, alongside commission members, representatives of the State Office of Industrial Property, the departments responsible for geology and mining, and the director of the Geological Institute, Ivica Andov.

What exactly is being set up

There are four priorities. First, a certification system - a stone sold as Macedonian ruby will have to carry proof of origin and authenticity. Second, a catalogue and register of authorised producers and processors, with records of quantities and of the stone's movement. Third, standards for processing, labelling and market presentation. Fourth, preventing other minerals being presented as Macedonian ruby, plus work towards international recognition.

"By protecting the Macedonian ruby we have taken a historic step, but the work does not end there," Bozinovska said, noting that the aim is for buyers to know they are buying a certified, registered and protected stone.

The Macedonian ruby is geologically unique - its raspberry colour comes from chromium in its crystal structure, and the deposits are tied to the Prilep and Mariovo regions.

Why this matters more than it sounds

The Balkans have a long tradition of producing something valuable and then selling that same thing under someone else's name. Domestic honey, ajvar, tobacco, rakija - all of them went through a period when the quality was ours and the label was somebody else's. The difference between a raw material and a brand is measured in zeros on the invoice, and that difference has regularly ended up in someone else's pocket.

A register and a certificate are the only defence against that. If a buyer in Geneva or Bangkok can verify that the stone in their hand came from the Prilep area and that the processor is on an official register, the price stops being a negotiation and becomes a value.

That is also the point where the whole thing can fall over. A register that exists on paper with nobody to maintain it is a spent budget. The question is not whether the commission has been formed - it has. The question is who will police traceability in the field, at the mine, when nobody is watching.
