The Royal Palace in Oslo hosted King Haakon's first grand gala dinner, the traditional banquet at which the crown receives members of the government. The most eyes weren't on the king, but on his daughter. Princess Ingrid appeared in an amethyst and diamond tiara she had never worn in public before.
The jewel's history is as clear as a family tree. King Harald V gave it to Queen Sonja for her 60th birthday in 1997. In 2004, after Ingrid was born, Sonja passed it to her daughter-in-law Mette-Marit. Twenty-two years later, the tiara sits on the head of the girl whose birth made it change owners.
This time Ingrid set aside her familiar Boucheron circle tiara, in which she debuted in 2022, and paired the amethysts with diamond earrings. The choice is hardly accidental. At royal banquets, jewellery is a language: what you wear, who you inherited it from and whom you appear before.
The big absentee of the evening was Queen Mette-Marit. She recently underwent a lung transplant, and the Royal Court plans her return to public life only next summer. Her tiara, however, was in the room.
And not just as a symbol. Ingrid is the first direct heir to have taken the oath to the Constitution after coming of age, which means she can already take on state duties, including serving as regent if needed. In Norway, the tiara on her head and the signature she can put on a state document go together.
Queen Sonja was also at the banquet, at her first gala dinner since her husband's death, wearing jewellery from the Glücksburg dynasty. Grandmother and granddaughter on one evening, and between them the daughter-in-law, present only through the amethysts. Who needs statements about the succession when the tiara already says who is next in line?
