The Rosenberg Trio, in the La Familia line-up with Mozes and Johnny Rosenberg, play Kanli Kula in Herceg Novi on August 6. The show is part of the twentieth Guitar Art Summer Fest, starts at 9 pm, and tickets are 3,500 dinars through tickets.rs.
The Rosenberg family is a Dutch Sinti dynasty that has held the top of gypsy jazz in Europe since the nineties. The original Rosenberg Trio was founded by cousins Stochelo, Nous'che and Nonnie Rosenberg in 1989, and the debut album Seresta came out the same year. All their music starts from Django Reinhardt, the Belgian guitarist who in the 1930s invented a genre with two fingers of his left hand after burning them in a fire.
Mozes Rosenberg is Stochelo's younger brother; he grew up in the same house and played with the trio as a boy. He has worked with Johnny Rosenberg since 2009, in a line-up where Mozes leads on solo guitar while Johnny holds the rhythm and sings. This is not a reconstruction of something old but jazz manouche passed down through a family, with modern influences on a tradition from the thirties.
The Guitar Art festival marks its twentieth year this season, and the Kanli Kula programme gathered Amira Medunjanin, Diego Baliardo's Gipsy Kings and the Rosenbergs in the same week. For a festival that keeps the guitar as its central instrument, that is sound logic: three entirely different schools on the same strings.
The fortress above Herceg Novi is an open-air stage looking out over the Bay of Kotor. Sales go through tickets.rs, at 3,500 dinars.
