Manchester City lifted the FA Cup for the first time since 2023, with the decisive moment delivered by Antoine Semenyo with a piece of improvisation worthy of a Wembley final. 1-0 against Chelsea, a goal in the 74th minute, and Guardiola adds a second trophy of the season after the League Cup.
The match was no spectacle. Tactical caution, few chances, a lot of midfield grind - exactly what you expect from a final in which losing hurts more than winning.
Erling Braut Haaland hadn't had service all evening, but he was the one who created the goal. He drove into space and then slipped a low ball back to Semenyo in the penalty area. The Ghana international took the ball first time and clipped it into the far corner with textbook execution. Robert Sánchez just watched it go past.
Up to that point, the biggest chance had been Haaland's disallowed goal in the 41st minute - a cross from Matheus Nunes, the touch, the net, then the offside flag. Chelsea had two or three half-chances through João Pedro and Wesley Fofana, but none of them troubled James Trafford.
Guardiola played his tactical card at half-time - Rayan Cherki came on and immediately upped the tempo. The pressure built, and ten minutes later Semenyo's moment arrived.
For Chelsea, this is a fourth consecutive defeat in an FA Cup final - a streak that is finding its way into statistical trivia. Enzo Fernández only just missed an equaliser straight after the goal, and after that City defended the result professionally.
For City, it means the treble is still alive, because the title race in the English Premier League behind Arsenal is still not over. And finally, it ends the run of cup final defeats against Manchester United and Crystal Palace in the last two years. Guardiola has a trophy in his hands again - not the biggest one, but in this season anything that comes along is welcome.
