Skin Icing - Ice on the Face for Puffy Eyes: What Really Works and What's an Illusion

A trick as old as the fridge has become a viral hit again: skin icing, or applying cold to the face to reduce swelling, dark circles and the feeling of tightness. The idea is simple, but behind it stands real physiology - not just a fashionable craving for something new.

When the skin comes into contact with cold, the blood vessels first contract and then dilate - which improves the flow of oxygen and nutrients. Claudia Sánchez, a pharmacist and the CEO of a cosmetics company, explains that the cold works against swelling, the bags under the eyes and the feeling of a „puffy" face, especially in the morning. The result shows in a few minutes, and the skin looks fresher and more awake.

But there are important warnings too. Never apply ice directly to the skin - you risk frostbite and damage to the capillaries. Wrap the ice in a cotton cloth or use a special tool with a controlled temperature. Hold it for one to five minutes at most, with gentle upward movements, without lingering in one place, and apply a serum beforehand for protection.

The method isn't for everyone. People with rosacea, sensitive or reactive skin, dermatitis or a damaged skin barrier should avoid it. And most importantly - don't kid yourself: skin icing gives only a temporary cosmetic effect. It doesn't turn back time, doesn't create collagen and doesn't change the structure of the skin. It refreshes you for the mirror, it doesn't rejuvenate you for good. When the beauty industry sells a „miracle", it's worth knowing where the line is.
