We put sunscreen on at the beach and think we are done. Dermatologists say that this very logic costs us the most - we make the biggest mistakes with sun protection exactly when we think we don't need it.
The first mistake is skipping protection when we are indoors. Glass blocks most of the UVB rays that cause sunburn - but it lets through UVA radiation, which damages collagen and ages the skin. „Even though we are inside, we remain exposed to radiation," explains dermatologist Javier Pedraz. The same goes for cloudy days: clouds only partly soften the sun and give a false sense of security.
The second common misconception is that tinted SPF cream is enough on its own. When applied in sufficient quantity (the „two-finger" rule), tinted formulas give an unnatural look, so people apply too little. The recommendation is to combine them - a regular protective cream, plus the tinted one on top. The iron oxide in tinted creams gives extra protection against dark spots.
The third is the most banal: we do not reapply. Experts advise cream every two hours. And the last - protection is not a seasonal matter. „Even when you've tanned, the cells are damaged," says dermatologist Cristina García Millán. The point is not to scare us off the sun, but to understand that the damage is cumulative - it builds up quietly, day by day, without pain, until one day it shows on the face.
