System Failed: Mother and Daughter from Taftalidze Were Domestic Violence Victims for Years

The tragedy in Skopje's Taftalidze district gained a new, painful dimension. After the death of a mother and daughter who fell from a building in Karpos, their brother and uncle shook Macedonian public opinion with his testimony of systemic failures and long-term domestic violence.

"After years of reported domestic violence, physical and psychological abuse, threats, reports, and an attempted murder in a state institution - I lost my daughter-in-law and sister. The state allowed young lives to be extinguished," his statement read.

The family testifies that for years they alerted institutions - police and social work centers - about the violence endured by the woman and child, but without effective response. There was even a reported attempted murder within a state institution. Yet neither the Ministry of Interior nor social services managed to protect the victims.

Reactions on social media were enormous. Many citizens and activists commented that this is not a tragic accident but a systemic failure - a system that fails to protect women and children who are victims of violence.

The Basic Public Prosecution announced it is gathering evidence and has summoned several people for questioning. Autopsies on the bodies of both deceased have been ordered. The family pledged they would not allow the case to be forgotten or treated as mere statistics.
