Cleveland, Denver and the Clippers agreed a trade in which Peyton Watson goes to the Cavaliers, Max Strus to Los Angeles, and the Nuggets receive an unprotected first-round pick in 2031 and a second-rounder from Sacramento in 2032. Watson immediately signs a contract worth 88 million dollars over four years. The numbers that justify the sum: 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists on average last season - genuinely the best of his career. The number that qualifies it: 54 games, because injuries interrupted every attempt at a breakthrough. In current NBA logic, potential is paid for up front and the risk is transferred to the club doing the signing. In the same package Cleveland sent Washington a player, a pick and cash for Cam Whitmore, and Washington sent a player to Denver who is expected to be waived immediately. Four clubs, one evening.

Wembanyama is captain of France at 22

Victor Wembanyama is officially the new captain of the French national team, a decision by head coach Frederic Fauthoux ahead of qualifying for the 2027 World Cup. „I know I am the youngest here, but I fully intend to lead by example”, said the San Antonio player. He is 22 and already carries the weight of an entire basketball nation - last season he took the Spurs to the NBA finals and was an MVP finalist, and he last played for France at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he won silver. LeBron is already training with his new teammates, and the season is far away

Anybody else at 41, having just changed clubs, would take another two weeks off. LeBron James instead organised an early morning session in Los Angeles with Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey - the three of them are Philadelphia's new core after his departure from the Lakers. The session was run by veteran NBA coach Chris Johnson, who posted the photographs. Brown is also new to the club, brought in during the aggressive summer rebuild of the roster, while Maxey remains the pillar of the franchise. Doncic gathered the Lakers in Ljubljana: a private jet, Bled and fishing

After LeBron's departure, Luka Doncic is taking over as the first man in the Lakers' locker room - and he showed it the Balkan way. He invited his teammates to his native Ljubljana for a four-day gathering from 20 to 24 August, arranged a private flight for 14 people, and on landing everyone received a package of Slovenian products. The programme includes training, but also a trip to Bled, fishing, golf and dinner at his favourite restaurant. The turnout says it all: 16 of his 17 teammates came, among them Austin Reaves, Walker Kessler and Bronny James. Hospitality as a leadership tool is something this region understands without translation - except that here the bill is usually paid by the host out of his own pocket, not by the club.

Rabotnicki brought back Nikolov: experience instead of publicity

After a season that does not match the club's tradition, KK Rabotnicki signed occasional Macedonian international Kristijan Nikolov, arriving from Gaziantep in Turkey. Before that he played for Galatasaray, Trabzon and Konyaspor, and in Macedonian basketball he also turned out for MZT Skopje Aerodrom from 2019 to 2022. He returns to Rabotnicki after 2023. It is the second signing in a short span - before him the club brought in Tarik Bruncevic, and conditioning coach Anatolij Romanov has also been engaged. What is missing from statements like these is the budget and an ambition expressed in something more concrete than the phrase „returning the winning identity”. Whether three signings make a team fighting for the title will be seen when the season starts - not in a post on the club's website.
