Thousands of citizens gathered in Skopje on March 8 for the protest march "We Won't Be Silenced," organised by the civic initiative "Who is Next?" and dozens of NGOs. This year's march became one of the largest International Women's Day demonstrations in the city's history.
Participants gathered at Women's Fighter Park and observed a minute of silence in honour of women who lost their lives. The march then proceeded to the Government building before concluding at City Park.
Banners carried messages including: "No freedom without free women," "Justice for Ivana," "Justice for Katja," "Justice for Rosica," and "Not one more." Among the most striking slogans were "Endure, report, die" and "A deadly 8th of March, dear ladies" - reflecting public bitterness towards institutional failures.
Organiser Marta Stefkovska explained that the march is an act of resistance against "the figurative and literal erasure of women in a system that oppresses, ignores and does not listen to their demands and cries for help against violence."
Participants sent a clear message: "You must apologise to all women living in constant fear and stress, because due to your negligence we are unsafe everywhere - at home, on the street, or in institutions." The march concluded with flowers laid at a memorial to Vera Jocic, a symbol of the struggle for freedom and equality.
