Arsenal champions of England: City drop the crown with a 1:1 at Bournemouth, the Guardiola era is over

Arsenal are the new Premier League champions after Manchester City drew 1:1 away at Bournemouth on Tuesday evening. The London club didn't even have to play - the points City dropped in that decisive away game were enough.

Bournemouth opened the scoring through Junior Kroupi, who curled the ball into the top corner - the goal wasn't a fluke, the hosts had several more chances to extend it and could have made the evening even more dramatic. The fact that they didn't almost cost them, but not quite - City eventually pulled it back.

Erling Haaland equalised in stoppage time for 1:1 and salvaged a point that, in this situation, is worth very little. City played under the weight of the schedule - a fifth match since the start of May, with the FA Cup win over Chelsea on their backs. Pep Guardiola made just one change to the starting XI, pulling Omar Marmoush and bringing in Mateo Kovacic. The Croatian veteran extracted nothing.

Same story with Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo - all had a night to forget. Guardiola took off Semenyo and Silva before the 60th minute and brought on Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden, but neither created a chance either.

City now face an away trip to Aston Villa on Sunday - a match with no stakes other than the biggest one. Guardiola, according to reports, is leaving the club at the end of the season, though he himself insists he hasn't made a final decision. Former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is already being floated as his successor. An era in which City won six Premier League titles in eight years has bowed out.
