She walked up to tell her how beautiful she looked, and ended up with her as her wedding dress designer

The best story from this wedding is not about the dress. It is about how the bride found her designer: she saw a woman in red at an event, walked up to tell her how beautiful she looked, and only a few days after her own wedding was told that this woman had designed her own dress.

Ana and Miguel married in September at the basilica of the Assumption of Mary in Lekeitio - a Basque town where Miguel's family has summered for years and where royal families once holidayed too. The celebration continued at the Zubieta Palace, considered the most important rural palace in the Basque Country.

The dress

The design is by Claudia Llagostera: a V-neckline, bare shoulders and white details embroidered with gold sequins across the skirt. No second dress, no changing halfway through the reception into something shorter. „I liked my dress so much that I wanted to make the most of it, for every possible hour of the day”, the bride says.

That is a decision worth noting, because the second-dress trend has already become a rule nobody questions. Ana questioned it with the simplest argument there is - why take off something you like.

The veil

„The veil was one of the last things I chose. It was rustic silk, with a beautiful transparency.” There is a lesson here for anyone agonising over a veil for months before the wedding: it is the piece least visible in photographs and the one that drags out the decision-making most.

The details

Velvet shoes in an amber shade with gold tones, from Flordeasoka - a gift from her mother. Earrings from M de Paulet, a gift from her sister María. This is an old Balkan custom under a different name: every piece on the bride carrying somebody from the family's signature.

The flowers were done by Marina Aguirre from Bilbao, and the bride chose the colour: „I liked those rustic tones, white, yellow, green and with a little pomegranate or bougainvillea colour.” Hydrangeas went on the tables and, instead of decorative trinkets, plums. The cake was minimalist, shaped like a mountain.

What stays

Asked what struck her most, the bride answered with no detail from the decor at all: „Walking into the church arm in arm with my father.” And about the whole day: „Having all the people you love gathered around you is a feeling of complete happiness that cannot be described.”

Anyone who has organised a wedding in this region knows the same arithmetic - months of calculations for flowers, menus and seating plans, and in the end what is remembered is one walk down the aisle and the faces in the front rows. Not because the rest was worthless, but because a wedding was never an exhibition.
