On 12 September, in New York, Olympia of Greece walked a runway. Not as a front-row guest, but as a model, in a purple dress from designer Conner Ives' spring-summer 2027 collection. It is the first time she has crossed the distance separating the chairs from the runway itself.

She is thirty and the daughter of Prince Pavlos, granddaughter of Constantine II, the last king of Greece. In other words, a throne that has been gone for half a century gives her a surname, and the fashion industry gives her a job. That is not a random swap, but one of the cleanest illustrations of how Europe's former dynasties relocated from politics to image.

The path to the runway was long and well lit. For years she has been sitting in the front rows in Paris, Milan, London, Copenhagen and New York. She is an ambassador for the Moda Operandi platform. In 2020 she was the face of Louis Vuitton's Capucines bag. She has collaborated with Olympia Le-Tan on collections of book-shaped handbags. The family connection with fashion is older than she is: her father and brother appeared in "The Dior Sessions", shot by Nikolai von Bismarck.

The designer himself is a story worth separating out. Conner Ives was born in New York, trained at Central Saint Martins, works out of London, and this season returned to the official New York calendar after years of showing in London. He works with vintage pieces and with deadstock material left unused, which in an industry built on the permanently new puts him on the opposite side from the mainstream.

Is this a career or a sponsored appearance? The question is fair and has no easy answer. A name with a crown in the family tree opens a door another model needs ten years to reach. On the other hand, nobody puts you on a runway if you do not want to be there, and Olympia hides nothing: she posts the backstage preparations, and congratulations came in from Talita von Furstenberg, Ivy Getty and Poppy Delevingne.

Across this fashion week, running from 10 to 15 September, she moved between styles from severe to considerably bolder. That is the frame Europe's former royal families work in today: no state, no remit, but a recognisable face. And that face is leased out, only nobody says it that loudly.
