Barcelona have closed the loudest transfer of the summer - Rodri has signed until 2030, with the Catalans paying 60 million euros guaranteed plus 11 million in bonuses. The interesting part is the one that stayed in the shadows: Real Madrid were also in the running, but offered somewhere around 40 to 45 million, significantly below Manchester City's price. Madrid calculated that it was not worth overpaying for a player who recently returned from a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury. Barcelona calculated differently - that the man at the heart of Spain's World Cup title is worth the current price, not the current risk. Hansi Flick wanted an experienced player to run things from midfield, especially with Frenkie de Jong's injuries. Which of the two clubs does the better maths will become clear by spring.
From this season the English league will air parts of the conversations between referees and players during the broadcast - an upgrade on the ear-mounted camera that debuted last year. Until now those recordings only came out after the match, giving clubs a full week to shape the narrative. Now the audio will be played shortly after the contentious incident, in one or two matches per round. There is one major exception: IFAB rules prohibit broadcasting anything connected to a VAR check, and that is precisely where most of the tension lies. The league promises to press IFAB to relent, but director Lukas Brud has already warned that this could put referees in an unsafe position. Transparency with a fence around it - but still more than any league on this continent offers.
Newcastle have emptied their midfield - Sandro Tonali left for Tottenham, Bruno Guimarães for Arsenal - and are now looking for someone to fill it. On the list is Nico González, who joined Manchester City in January 2025 and has since racked up 60 matches and four goals without ever fully convincing. In the Community Shield against Arsenal he played 11 minutes. That figure says everything about his standing under Enzo Maresca. The Spaniard wants to stay in Manchester, but knows that without regular minutes his season is lost. City, meanwhile, are rebuilding that same line after the departures of Bernardo Silva and Rodri - they have already taken Elliot Anderson and are looking for more. A club selling and buying in the same position in the same summer usually does not know what it wants.
Tetovo have served their punishment. After the incidents at last season's Cup final, Škendija played their first two home matches of this season in front of empty stands, and from Monday against Struga the fans return. The match is scheduled for 7pm at the pitch in the Football Federation complex in Skopje. Formally, Škendija registered Gostivar as their home ground because of the reconstruction of the city stadium in Tetovo, yet they are playing in Skopje - the pitch there is in better condition and allows an evening kick-off, which matters given their European commitments. So: a club from Tetovo, registered in Gostivar, playing in Skopje. Home ground in Macedonian football has long been an administrative category rather than a geographical one.
The evening in the Champions League play-offs deceived everyone expecting home dominance. Nikola Serafimov and his Levski drew 0-0 with AEK in Sofia - a result that looks neutral on paper but actually means everything gets settled in Athens. Dinamo Zagreb led 2-0 against Viking after goals from Beljo and Lisica in the first ten minutes, and finished 2-2. Fenerbahçe also failed to win at home. Not a single home side in those ties recorded a victory, which is rare statistics for a first leg. For a Macedonian reader that first number matters most: one Macedonian on the pitch, right on the threshold of the group stage. The return leg is in Athens - that is where the rest gets written.
