Sunderland After 53 Years in Europe - Chelsea Slips Up and Goes Home Empty-Handed

Sunderland did something it hadn't done for 53 years - it qualified for Europe. And it did so with a win over Chelsea of 2-1 in the final round of the Premier League, played at the "Stadium of Light".

The result doesn't sound dramatic, but the context is everything. Sunderland, a club that has spent years bouncing between the Championship and relegation battles, will play in the Europa League next season. Chelsea, for their part, did not expect to finish the season in tenth place without a European qualification.

The match started with Cole Palmer getting a chance for the London side, but Robin Roefs in Sunderland's goal saved an excellent strike. Then the hosts gradually started to take over the pitch. Trai Hume broke the net in the 25th minute after a long ball from goalkeeper Roefs and a cross from Luke O'Nien.

The second goal was classic Chelsea irony - a shot from Brobbey deflected off Malo Gusto and turned into an own goal. At the end, Palmer pulled one back from 20 meters, but Sunderland had everything in its hands. A worrying moment came when Wesley Fofana picked up a second yellow card for a foul on Wilson Isidor and Chelsea finished with ten players.

Sunderland finished seventh, Chelsea tenth. For the hosts, this is the biggest historic moment since entering the Premier League - the first European campaign in more than half a century. For Chelsea, this is a season to forget. The owner has to decide whether the coach stays or whether they head into another attempt with a new name on the bench.
