Vardar Pointless at the Bottom of the Champions League, Gidsel's 17 Goals Equal a Record, and Ohrid Topple Alkaloid

Vardar - Wisła Płock 26:32: Fadhuil's 14 goals weren't enough

Vardar 1961 are bottom of Group B in the Champions League and still waiting for their first point after three rounds. At home against Orlen Wisła Płock, Vardar were already trailing 3:8 after 11 minutes, clawed back to two goals behind by half-time (13:15), but then the visitors pulled away to 27:19. Fadhuil, with 14 goals from 14 attempts, won his personal duel with Dane Frederik Bjerre (10 goals) - and that was Vardar's only win of the night. The numbers are almost ironic: Vardar have scored the most goals in the group (89), but also conceded 98. The return match is on Wednesday at 8:45 p.m. in Poland, and a defeat there means a place in the main phase starts slipping seriously out of reach. Will Vardar find a defence before they run out of Europe?

Gidsel equals Chuchi Martínez de la Cal's record

Mathias Gidsel scored 17 goals from 19 attempts in Füchse Berlin's win over Porto (40:32), equalling the Champions League record that Spain's Jesús "Chuchi" Martínez de la Cal had held alone for 17 years. The Dane thus cemented his place at the top of the scoring chart with 36 goals after three rounds. In round three, Barcelona recorded their 19th consecutive win in the Champions League, 34:27 against Dinamo Bucharest, while Aarhus celebrated the club's first-ever win in the competition, 36:32 over two-time champions Montpellier. Porto will seek revenge at home on Thursday - but does anyone have a plan for stopping Gidsel?

Budućnost end their run of nine defeats

In the women's Champions League, Budućnost of Podgorica finally won - 23:22 against Norway's Sola, after nine straight defeats at the elite level. The Montenegrins led by four, but Sola levelled at 20:20 in the 54th minute with a 3:0 run. In the final seconds Sola stole the ball, but goalkeeper Armelle Attingré saved the counter-attack, and the Norwegians then missed two more chances. Ivana Godec was top scorer with 7 goals. Slovenia's Krim, meanwhile, lost 31:37 to Dortmund and are one of three teams still without a point. A region whose clubs once lifted the Champions League trophy is now celebrating a one-goal win.

Ohrid - Alkaloid 26:24: first defeat for Lazarov's side

At "Biljanini Izvori", GRK Ohrid handed Alkaloid their first defeat of the season, 26:24 in the round-six Super League derby. Kiril Lazarov's team led 7:4 in the 15th minute, but by the break Ohrid had shut down their defence and went in 15:11 up, leading by six in the 43rd minute. Tilen Strmljan and Dominik Máthé scored 6 each to top the home side's scoring, with Nikola Kosteski matching that on the other side. Ohrid, thrashed by Vardar the round before, are back to winning ways. Vardar, meanwhile, beat Struga away 33:24 and remain the only team with a perfect record - six wins from six games.

Tomovski makes 13 saves as Bietigheim earn second Bundesliga win

Martin Tomovski has been in excellent form since the start of the season in the world's strongest league, but those performances rarely brought wins. In round eight it finally paid off: Bietigheim beat Göppingen away 29:25, with the Macedonian goalkeeper making 13 saves, or 35 percent of the shots he faced. Herrmann was top scorer with seven goals. It's the team's second win of the season and the first since August, when Bietigheim beat Wetzlar on the road on opening day. They've climbed to 15th and moved away from the danger zone - and national coach Lazarov has at least one goalkeeping worry fewer.
