Nine Hairstyles From the Emmys, and in Every One the Effect Is Made Only at the Ends

The Emmys are over and what is left of them are not the statuettes but nine hairstyles salons will be asked for all autumn. All nine are waved, and that is no accident - the wave is the only style that manages to look done and at the same time as though you had not tried.

The thing you least expect from a red carpet: almost every version starts with a flat root. On Sarah Pidgeon the waves are concentrated from mid-length down, while the root stays straight. The same logic on Isabel Gravitt - softened broken waves only at the ends, with a side parting that gives the root volume. So the entire effect is made in one place, not along the whole length of the hair.

For fine hair, Elle Fanning's version: tight spiral waves, with volume from the middle down and a tousled texture at the crown. The opposite pole is Chase Infiniti - heavily curled waves that are then separated and loosened by hand for maximum dimension.

Selena Gomez is the honest data point in the whole story: her cascading curls have extra volume because she has extensions. You will not get that in a salon with a curling iron alone, and it is worth knowing before you walk in with a photo on your phone.

Kristen Bell wears the half-up with broken waves - the easiest to repeat at home and the most forgiving of mistakes. Sienna Miller combines it with a side fringe, which frames the face and lifts the root at the same time.

On Emmy Rossum, stylist Alberto Sanguino explains what is rarely said out loud: layers are what allow you to build silhouettes around the face. Not the product, not the curling iron - the cut. The same applies to Linda Cardellini, with soft waves, a curtain fringe and layers at different heights for density.

The nine look like nine different ideas. In fact they are three things repeating: you make the effect only at the ends, the parting gives you the volume, and the cut does what no spray can. Everything else is a choice of texture. Good news if you do not care about the trend, bad news if you were expecting that this time you would need to buy something new.
