Bulky waste in Skopje: where the old furniture goes

An old sofa, a worn-out cooker or rubble from a renovation - in Skopje, bulky waste usually ends up next to the containers, even though there are two legal ways to get rid of it. One is free, the other is paid per trip. Here are both.

Free: take it there yourself

Skopje residents can take bulky waste from their homes themselves, free of charge, to the recycling yard of JP Komunalna higiena in Karpoš or in Vardarište. That covers old furniture, broken electrical and electronic appliances and rubble from renovating the home. Free drop-off applies to residents and the waste from their own home.

Pickup from home: what it costs

If you have no way to take it there yourself, Komunalna higiena collects it from a flat with a goods lift, from a yard or from an entrance. You call the free number, arrange the details, and the service is paid per trip according to the company's price list. For any additional service the company also asks for a completed request form, which is published on its website.

Prices exclude VAT, per the price list JP Komunalna higiena Skopje adopted in May 2020. One trip is a tipper truck of up to 2.5 m³.

Why not to leave it next to the container

Bulky waste left in the street doesn't disappear by itself. Someone has to come for it separately, and until then it blocks the pavement and sits there as an invitation for more rubbish. The household waste container isn't meant for furniture and rubble, and recycling containers even less so.

The free recycling yard is the cheapest option. Collection from home costs money, but it solves the problem if you have no vehicle - and it beats a sofa sitting on the pavement for weeks.
