E-waste: where to take an old fridge, TV or phone

An old fridge doesn't get dumped next to the container, and a battery doesn't go in the rubbish bag. Macedonia has free options for e-waste - it's just that few people know about them. Here's who takes it, where, and on what terms.

Free pickup from home

Nula Otpad

Collects e-waste for free from your doorstep, anywhere in the country. The appliance must be complete, disconnected from power and water, and left somewhere easy to reach. Book by phone or through the "Prijavi e-otpad" (report e-waste) form on their website.

Elkolekt

Runs free drop-off points and eco-depots for e-waste in primary schools and municipal buildings, together with the local public utility companies. Ask their green line for the nearest drop-off point in your municipality.

When you buy a new appliance

Macedonia's law on electrical and electronic equipment requires three things of shops:

  • One for one. When you buy a new appliance, the shop must take back the old one of the same type for free.
  • Home delivery. If the shop delivers your new appliance to your home, it must offer to take the old one away for free.
  • Small appliances without buying. Shops larger than 400 m² must accept small appliances up to 25 centimetres, even if you buy nothing.

This is an obligation, not a favour. If a shop refuses, you have every right to ask why.

Batteries

Batteries contain metals that must not end up in landfill, so they go neither in mixed rubbish nor in the yellow container.
