Arsenal Awaits a Final Without a Crown: A Win at West Ham That Sealed the Premier League

Arsenal won 1-0 at West Ham in London and effectively wrapped up what has long looked certain: the Premier League title. With a five-point lead and two rounds to go, Mikel Arteta's team is practically one step away from the first championship trophy since the 2003/04 season.

The match at the London Stadium wasn't a show. For a long stretch it looked as if West Ham would pull off the biggest upset of the spring - in the 78th minute Mateus Fernandes broke clean through on goal, but David Raya saved from point-blank range. One save that wins a title.

Just minutes later, on the other side, Leandro Trossard punctured the net for the only goal of the game. The home side in the very finish thought it had rescued a point through Callum Wilson, but the goal was disallowed for a foul in the build-up. VAR once again the deciding word.

With this defeat, West Ham stay 17th and failed to climb out of the relegation zone. If Tottenham beat Leeds on Monday, the „Hammers" will sit four points from safety, with trips to Newcastle and a home game against Leeds left. In other words - two finals, with no margin for error.

The same result had a side effect: Leeds and Nottingham Forest mathematically secured the Premier League for next season. A seven-point lead, two rounds to go, homework done.

And Arsenal? Wins at Burnley and at Crystal Palace and the first championship ring in two decades becomes reality. Manchester City, who beat Brentford 3-0 on Saturday, stay five points behind, but without a miracle in the last two rounds - and without an Arteta collapse - this season for the „Gunners" is over before it's over.
