The only fashion trend this autumn that requires no buying: three earth tones instead of a beige coat

A beige coat is the safest thing in any wardrobe, and that is exactly why it is also the dullest. Yesterday on the Scottish island of Bute, Kate Middleton did what stylists have been recommending for years and nobody listens to: she dropped the beige and wore a fully earth-toned palette - and suddenly the same cut looked twice as expensive.

The coat was chocolate brown, Burberry, long, with a wrap closure and a light fabric. Underneath - an olive green ribbed polo neck from Iris & Ink. The trousers were in the same shade, with a belt and a metal buckle in field-gear style. On her feet, instead of the usual heels, dark brown suede boots with a rubber sole.

Why that works and beige does not

Beige is neutral, and neutral does not create depth - it just sits there. When three shades from the same earth family (brown, olive, dark brown) are layered on top of one another, the eye reads layers rather than one flat surface. That is the same trick expensive brands use to justify a price: they do not change the cut, they change the tone.

And here is the point for anyone without a Burberry budget. This is the only fashion trend this autumn that requires no buying. If you have a brown coat and a green jumper, you already have the look. The industry sells a new silhouette every season because a silhouette requires a new receipt; a colour does not.

The detail with the boots

Kate rarely appears without a heel, and yesterday she was on an island with grass, mud and wind. Suede boots with a textured sole are the only logical decision for that terrain, and they are still worth mentioning, because dropping the heel is what most often ruins an entire look - if the rest is not part of the same story. Here it was.

For jewellery, gold earrings with small hearts and diamond stars - according to sources, a gift from William for her 44th birthday.

Palace fashion has one advantage over runway fashion: it has to survive a whole day outdoors, in front of cameras, with no dresser. That is the only test that means anything to someone going to work in Skopje tomorrow, too.
