A drone hit a train on the Ukrainian-Polish border, two kilometres from NATO territory. The train was empty, the locomotive damaged, nobody hurt. But the story is not in the damage. It is in who was on that same track only hours earlier.
On the same line, in a different train, former British prime minister Boris Johnson, British official Jonathan Powell and a group of European security advisers were travelling back. They were returning from a conference in Kyiv. Former CIA director David Petraeus was at the station in Yagodin at the exact moment the drone struck, and described the attack as horrifying, the work of a leader who wants to terrorise Ukrainian civilians.
Moscow said it had targeted railway infrastructure in western Ukraine. Ukrainian Railways says something rather different - that the drone may have been looking for the "diplomatic train" specifically. There is no middle ground between those two versions: either Russia happened by chance to hit the most sensitive train on that line that day, or it was not chance at all.
Fifteen minutes
That is how much time passengers had between the evacuation order being issued and the drone hitting. Ukrainian Railways explains that the diplomatic train left earlier than scheduled, because timetables shift constantly under the threat of Russian strikes. Former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt recounted being told on his train to prepare for evacuation, and a few minutes later that everything was fine. That is what a train journey across Europe looks like in 2026.
Johnson later wrote that he does not know what twisted logic led Putin to blow up a stationary locomotive on the Polish border, and that this is the kind of random, pointless attack Ukrainians endure every single day. He called on allies to send air defence systems urgently.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha packed the whole meaning into one sentence: Putin's terror is knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called an emergency meeting and warned that escalation from the Russian side is becoming a reality and is edging ever closer to the border.
Two kilometres
That is the distance between the hit locomotive and the Polish border. Which is to say, between a drone and a NATO member. In recent months Russia has increasingly targeted Ukrainian trains, rail depots, fuel stations and border crossings - earlier this week two people were killed in a Russian strike on the crossing towards Moldova.
The Balkans know what it looks like when a border becomes a line nobody wants to step over first while everyone tests how far the other side's patience goes. The difference is that here every such test is counted in minutes and metres. How many times does a drone have to land two kilometres from NATO territory before it stops being called an incident?
