In a small place in northern Slovenia, in the municipality of Radlje ob Dravi, a woman was killed in her own home. The suspect is her partner - a thirty-nine-year-old citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina, whom Slovenian police caught shortly before midnight, not far from the scene of the crime. He did not resist arrest.
According to police in Celje, once the investigation is complete he will be brought before an investigating judge on a criminal charge of murder. The motive is still unknown. And here begins the part that hurts most in stories like these - not the crime itself, but how little was known beforehand.
A family that troubled no one - until the night everything collapsed
Police said the family had had no prior interventions and that the suspect had no record of criminal offences - only a single traffic violation. Neighbours who spoke to Slovenian media described him as kind, hard-working and non-confrontational. The police, however, have information that he had recently been mentally very unstable.
That is the portrait that most often surfaces after tragedies like these across the Balkans: „a quiet man”, „he caused no trouble”, „we are shocked”. And then - a dead woman and a family shattered overnight. How many times do we have to read the same description before we stop pretending these things come out of a clear sky?
A Balkans with no border for the same problem
The story tied three countries together at once. The victim and the suspect lived in Slovenia, he is a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and both Croatian and Austrian security services were notified of his flight. Around thirty police officers and detectives took part in the search, with police dogs, mounted police, drones and a helicopter. They searched along the river Drava too - checking whether he had done something to himself.
Femicide recognises no borders in the Balkans - neither national nor class ones. From Skopje to Ljubljana the story repeats with terrifying regularity, and the system almost always reacts only once there is already a body. The question that remains is not who did this - the police will close that. The question is why a „mentally unstable” man in a family reaches anyone's radar only after a woman has died.
