Real Madrid Buys Dumfries for 20 Million: Mourinho Builds the Defence Before the Attack

Real Madrid reached an agreement for Inter's right-back, Denzel Dumfries, and readily activated the release clause of 20 million euros. The personal terms are already agreed - only the formal steps remain before the official announcement.

The Dutchman had interest from several clubs across Europe, but his priority was the Santiago Bernabéu. The move comes as Madrid prepares for life without longtime captain Dani Carvajal, who leaves this summer. Although it has already secured Trent Alexander-Arnold, the club believes it needs one more option on the right side.

According to the media, new coach José Mourinho has put shoring up the defence at the top of the priorities ahead of his expected return to the bench. Dumfries fits the profile - physically strong, fast and with a contribution going forward.

The former PSV Eindhoven player established himself as one of the most reliable attacking full-backs in Europe. Since arriving in Italy in 2021, he became a key figure for Inter and played an important role in the domestic and European successes of the „nerazzurri".

The maths is interesting too. Inter paid around 15 million euros to bring him from PSV five years ago, and now, even while losing a starter, it will turn a profit. For Madrid, on the other hand, the price is considered excellent value in today's inflated market, where full-backs of this level usually command sums twice as large.

Madrid is also working on other positions in defence - Ibrahima Konaté remains a target since it was confirmed he leaves Liverpool at the end of his contract. The message reads clearly: the new era at the Bernabéu will be built from the back, not just up front.
