Bianca Jagger married in trousers. May 1971, Saint-Tropez, a two-piece ivory suit by Yves Saint Laurent, a brooch shaped like a pink rose and a wide hat with flowers and a built-in veil. No white dress, no train. Fifty-five years later it still looks more contemporary than half of today's bridal offerings.
Yoko Ono did something similar two years earlier. On 20 March 1969 in Gibraltar, when she married John Lennon, she wore a short white above-the-knee dress with a pleated skirt, large round black sunglasses, socks, canvas shoes and a summer hat. That is airport clothing, not wedding clothing - which was precisely the point.
Linda McCartney went further from convention still: on 12 March 1969 in London she married Paul McCartney in a light yellow knee-length wool coat, with a beige dress underneath and square-heeled shoes. No make-up worth remembering. The most famous musician on the planet was getting married, and the bride looked like she was heading to a meeting.
Not everyone wanted to break tradition. Priscilla Presley, on 1 May 1967 in a suite at the Aladdin hotel in Las Vegas, wore a full-silhouette dress with pearls and crystals on the shoulders and sleeves - bought in a department store - and a one-metre veil with a tiara. The dress was conventional; a wedding in Las Vegas was not.
Pattie Boyd, on 21 January 1966 in Surrey, married George Harrison in a short dress with horizontal stripes, voluminous sleeves, white socks, lace-up shoes and a ribbon in her hair. Patti Hansen, on 18 December 1983 in Cabo San Lucas, chose the most eighties dress imaginable for Keith Richards - a princess cut with a sweetheart neckline and puffed sleeves.
Jo Howard designed her own dress for her wedding to Ronnie Wood on 2 January 1985 in Buckinghamshire: satin and lace, a mermaid silhouette, long sleeves, a knot at the side of the skirt. It was later sold at auction. Mandy Smith, on 5 June 1989 in London, married Bill Wyman with the most theatrical choice of all - lace over a princess silhouette, a bardot neckline, crystals, pink ribbons and an enormous veil.
Iman closed the circle. On 6 June 1992 in Florence, for David Bowie, she wore a shining silk Herve Leger dress with a narrow silhouette, a V-shaped neckline and a modest train. Long gloves, pearl earrings, half-pinned hair, a bouquet of lilies.
What connects all these brides is not rebellion for its own sake. They simply wore something that looked like them, at a time when that was not an option - and the wedding industry has since learned very well how to sell that same "personal choice" as a separate, more expensive category.
