A September wedding sounds like a compromise - not as hot as August, not as cold as October, the guests are back from holiday. That is exactly why it is also the most sought-after slot, which means everything you think you will find in July has already been taken by someone who started looking a year and a half ago.
Four Spanish wedding planners give the same figure independently of one another, which rarely happens in any industry. Eighteen months ahead - that is the deadline. Gisela Principe from Madrid allows twelve to eighteen, but adds that a specific venue or a specific supplier requires booking earlier. From Salamanca they say it plainly: „If the chosen month is September, planning has to start a minimum of eighteen months ahead.”
The order matters more than the list
Nobody books everything at once - and that is the mistake that later causes something to fall through. Rossi Landazuri gives the order: church, reception venue, catering, then music. Music is climbing higher up the priorities because good bands get booked early. The Salamanca team adds photography, video and the DJ immediately after catering.
Principe argues that before any of that come four decisions the couple has to make alone: budget, number of guests, city or an estate outside the city, and what experience they want to give people. Without those four, choosing suppliers is shooting in the dark.
What nobody tells you at the start
The biggest practical problem with a September wedding has nothing to do with the wedding. Before it comes August. People are on holiday, they do not reply, and the RSVPs arrive literally in the week before the event. That means the guest count - which determines the catering, the table plan and half the budget - stays unknown until the last moment.
The second problem is light. September does not have as much daylight as the peak of summer, and sunset is earlier. That directly shifts the photo session and the whole schedule of the day. From Seville they add one more local detail that applies here too: weddings in early September are usually held in the evening because of the heat, while from the twentieth onward they start moving to late-morning slots.
And there are things that have to be given up. Marquees and parasols are hard to find - everyone wants them at the same time. And Principe says the most awkward part: you have to let go of the idea of absolute control. September weather is changeable, the venue has its own rules, and plan B is not pessimism but a condition.
All four reach the same conclusion, and despite every problem listed above - the advantages outweigh them. Moderate temperature, better light, outdoor space that can finally be used. Weddings here are routinely planned like a military operation with months of preparation. The difference is that this operation has an exact deadline, and it falls a year and a half before the date.
