Fires in Studenichani and Bukovo, 33,722 uncollected fines, West Nile in Skopje, a car park for MPs

Three planes over Studenichani, and the crews stay all night

The morning readout looked fine: 37 registered fires in the previous 24 hours, three of them active. By 1pm the number had dropped to eight. By 6pm the Crisis Management Centre logged 22, eight of them active. That is not a curve going down, it is a picture of a system spending all day chasing new flashpoints while the old ones flare up again. Three planes flew over Studenichani, the head of the CMC followed the fire line himself, and the official message that no settlement is under threat sits in the same sentence as the second one: the crews stay on the ground all night. When the services do not go home, the situation is calmed, not solved.

The same day it burned in Kozle too, and at the landfill near Ohrid

In Skopje, the roof of two adjoining houses on Yuri Gagarin street caught fire. Nobody was hurt, and the detail that gets mentioned least is the one that matters most to residents: the houses were joined, and fire does not ask where the property line runs. Near Ohrid, meanwhile, the Bukovo landfill is burning, in a section where waste has not been dumped for some time. This year more than eight thousand cubic metres of soil were brought there for covering, precisely to reduce the chance of fire. The measure exists, it was carried out on a serious scale, and the landfill is burning anyway. Covering with soil is maintenance, not a solution.

Four dead from West Nile, and the argument is about the calendar

Skopje counts four dead and 35 confirmed cases, six people in intensive care. Instead of analysis, we got an exchange of dates: SDSM says the mayor is "reading a spraying calendar", Gjorgjievski answers that the work began on 7 May, nearly two months earlier than in 2018. That answers the question "did you work", not the question "did it work". From fewer than one case a week the count reached twelve in seven days, while the figure in Serbia is six. A list of dates shows something was done. It does not show where, whether it hit the actual breeding sites, or whether the effect was ever measured.

33,722 fines that nobody collected for four months

From today a foreign licence plate is no longer an exit from the system. At Tabanovce, drivers with foreign plates are stopped on the way out and handed a penalty notice. According to the Interior Ministry, between 2 February and 31 May there were 33,722 offences committed by vehicles with foreign plates. The camera finished its part of the job long ago; what was missing was the institution that turns the record into a collected fine. Day one brought queues, arguments and a police intervention - which is not an argument against enforcement, but an argument that the procedure should have been ready before it went out into the field in August.

Granite paving worth 1.6 million euro behind parliament

Behind the parliament building, a car park is being built for MPs' vehicles, worth 101,951,456 denars. The story of the land is older than the car park: in 2013 a company bought it at public auction for 333,000 euro, in 2024 the state declared it a security zone by law and stopped the construction, and now on the same spot it is building for itself with budget money. Compensation for the owner has still not been added up in any statement. The question of what the 2013 mistake cost will stay open long after the car park is finished.

"Every child will have a textbook" - except where they did not report in time

The two sentences in the same statement about free textbooks cannot both be true. The consequence is carried by the first-grader, not by the administration that missed the number. In transport, bus line 37 has returned via Slovenia Boulevard - the city transport company is using that route for the first time, connecting Radishani and Butel with Karposh 3, but with four departures. Between 08:55 and 14:55 there is nothing from Radishani for six hours. A line that exists on paper and a line you can count on are not the same thing.

Mickoski threw the ball, and on the EU the tone was different

In an interview for TV Sitel the prime minister said that if SDSM asks for early elections, the government will sit down and agree a date. The condition matters as much as the offer: he is not calling elections, he is making them conditional on a request from the other side. The price for the person saying that sentence is zero for as long as nobody picks up the glove. On the EU process, where progress was promised, the tone was noticeably more measured - the world is complicated, the appetite for enlargement weakened. A distribution of confidence worth noting.

Bears, forgeries, and one number that finally will not be an estimate

In Debreshte a bear was spotted 30 metres above the first houses, and the warning came not from an institution but from the village's Facebook page. Almost simultaneously, the first genetic monitoring of bears started from Pelister - the figure until now was "around 160 to 200", a range of forty animals. In Veles, meanwhile, a search turned up fake euros, gold coins "resembling gold" and zircons: the list of seized items is not a fortune, it is a prop kit for two frauds worth 5,500 euro.

The world: 40 trillion in debt, investigators at Zelensky's office, Russian planes over Nis

American debt reached 40 trillion dollars, two years earlier than Congress projected. Anti-corruption investigators entered the Office of the President of Ukraine, while there are whispers that the top of the security apparatus is preparing a response against them - a pattern the Balkans recognises immediately. A Russian Il-76 landed in Nis with 42 tonnes of water per flight and one well-organised welcome on the runway. And food is getting more expensive globally by 11.8 percent, with the bigger risk this time being not the war but the heat: June's record wave destroyed 9 million tonnes of grain across Europe.

And something lighter: Vardar are back, Doncic found out from the media

After a four-season break Vardar are in the Champions League again, and the Ohrid goalkeeper made 17 saves in a single evening. In basketball, the Lakers were sold for 12.5 billion dollars in three days without anyone asking the player the team was built around, while Rabotnicki and Shtip fill out the season with no cameras and no billions. Some things go better when nobody is watching.

The day the institutions spent running after things already alight ended the way it began: the planes landed, the crews stayed. The hardest part of today is not what burned, but how much of it was predictable.
