The Ministry of Health has announced a public tender for 100 new ambulances equipped with modern medical equipment. The value of the procurement is 461,250,000 denars, and the vehicles will be distributed across public health institutions throughout the country, with particular emphasis on rural areas.
Health Minister Azir Aliyu announced the project with a message that the purchase "significantly improves emergency medical capacity". The tender period is open for interested companies. For now, 100 new vehicles - after years of complaints that the emergency service was running on an outdated fleet.
Whether 100 vehicles is enough for a country where ambulances sometimes arrive 40 minutes late to rural municipalities - the coming years will tell. But for a start, at least the tender is open.
