Bitola: 31-Year-Old Wife Killed This Morning, Husband Immediately Detained

Another young woman killed at home. This time in Bitola, the Bair neighbourhood, on „5-ta" street, this morning around 07:30. The victim: a 31-year-old wife. The perpetrator: her 34-year-old husband, immediately taken into police custody.

The Internal Affairs Sector in Bitola has confirmed it as a case of domestic violence, with a prior argument between the spouses. More details from the investigation are expected later.

The numbers across the years are brutally stable. Macedonia averages 10-15 femicides a year. That means every 30 days, one woman loses her life at the hands of a husband, a former partner or a relative. The confusing part is that every death is a „single case", and no case ever gets a concrete systemic response.

The victim's story - we don't even know her name. That's the standard: the perpetrator gets a name, the victim gets an age. „31-year-old". Justice waits. Maybe 12 years in prison. Maybe less, with a confession and a plea of „reduced responsibility due to alcoholism" - the classic formula.

The question the political system should openly carry: where were the institutions before this death? How many violence reports had this woman filed? How many places does Bitola have for victims of family violence? Is there a local SOS line that works 24/7?

These are questions without answers. By tomorrow, a new death in some other town. Guaranteed. The institutions will condemn it, the labour minister will issue a statement, politicians will mourn. Until the next one.

The victim was born in 1995. She was 31. As of today, she will not turn 32.
