Excavator versus footbridge: the plan was visible for two days

One of the wooden footbridges in Skopje's City Park is unusable as of today, and the cause was neither a storm nor age. Workers tried to move an excavator across a structure built for people, the planks gave way, and the bridge collapsed under the weight. The worst detail is not the collapse but what preceded it: according to residents, improvised ramps had been laid on the bridge two days earlier. So there was a plan. There was preparation. And there were people who spent days watching someone get ready to haul heavy machinery over a wooden footbridge. The questions for the City of Skopje and the contractor are simple: who hired these workers, and who signed off on the machine crossing that bridge instead of going around it?

Water: 4,000 sick in Gostivar, and the argument is about 2021

The biggest political story of the day is who will sign the report on 4,000 people made ill in Gostivar. SDSM demands criminal liability and names officials one by one; Mickoski answers with 400 old complaints. Both claims can be true at once, which is exactly why neither answers the question of who is accountable this year. The same pattern shows up more quietly elsewhere: taps in Rič and Belotino have again tested positive for faecal bacteria, the second ban in two and a half years. The notice saying the water is unsafe hangs on the tap. What the institution did between the two bans hangs nowhere.

Lake Dojran and West Nile fever: systems that wait until it is too late

After a six-month pause, Đavato is pumping water into Lake Dojran again at 200 litres per second, but the level is already below the contracted minimum. The system exists precisely for moments like this, and it sat idle for half a year. Meanwhile the count of West Nile fever cases has reached 11, with one patient on a ventilator, and the virus is already circulating in the Skopje valley. Eighty percent of those infected show no symptoms, which means the 11 registered cases are not the epidemic - they are the part of it you can see.

Skopje 2028: 21 million euros outside public procurement, withdrawn without a word

The Anti-Corruption Commission flagged a high risk, the opposition blocked the bill over a signature in Albanian, and then Gashi pulled the law without a single word of explanation. The only announcement is that it will be „reworked” by September, while 21 million euros stay earmarked outside the public procurement system. Withdrawing the bill does not fix what the Commission warned about - it postpones the moment when someone has to vote on it in public.

A constitutional judge elected with 64 votes and a CV whose dates do not line up

Parliament elected a constitutional court judge with 64 votes. In her CV, the bar exam was passed seven months before she graduated, and the traineeship ran two years before university. The Judicial Council calls it a technical error, already corrected. Just not corrected where the MPs actually voted. This is the same shape as the bridge: the document was available before the decision, and the decision was taken on the basis of a version nobody checked.

Passport returned in Struga, border crossed in 24 hours

The court in Struga returned Borče Markovski's passport against a five-million-euro guarantee, and within 24 hours the man charged over a 1.7-million-euro tender was across the Tabanovce crossing with every document in order. Each actor in the chain has a defensible sentence - the court returned the papers lawfully, the police waved through a man with a valid passport. None of them owns the outcome. The same arithmetic of absent responsibility runs through the case of a purchased dentistry licence, where the certificate was issued and the question of how many such certificates are in circulation has no address to go to.

The money: 25 million new for accountability, 19.2 unspent

Parliament adopted a new 25-million-euro framework after spending 800,000 of the previous 20 million earmarked for accountability. We are giving up 19.2 million unspent and taking 25 million more, and the irony nobody mentioned is that the money being written off was intended for transparent institutions in the first place. The same register holds the announcement of a new 22.5-million-euro hospital in Kičevo, where a concept has been reviewed and no foundation stone has been laid. The list of announced hospitals in this country is longer than the list of built ones.

Skopje in the details: subsidies, storm compensation and a junction with no traffic light

The City of Skopje opened subsidies for trades facing shortages - a measure that addresses a workshop's cash flow but not the handover of skills to the next master craftsman. Storm compensation, meanwhile, comes with a 30-day deadline in Karpoš and two months in Centar, for the same wind and the same hail, plus a fourth condition: a police report you were supposed to request while your roof was flying off. And near Saraj, a nine-year-old on an e-scooter was run over at the exit toward the motorway. The police have every figure about the crash. Not one of them explains why that junction has no traffic light.

The region and the world: 94 years in prison, Vučić survives, Spain burns

A court in Split handed down 94 years in prison for a Yugoslav Army general and six commanders over 118 civilian lives, after 31 years of waiting, 450 witnesses and three thousand documents. Vučić's government survived a confidence vote and immediately started counting the days to an election. After 172,000 hectares of ash, Spain is asking for a European wildfire centre - and the proposal covers the western Mediterranean, so the Balkans are once again off the map, even though the same script burns here every summer.

The lighter half of the day

Vardar open tonight in Melsungen in a new 24-team Champions League, with Partizan back in the elite after 13 years. In football, Shkëndija play tonight for the last Macedonian hope in Europe this autumn, while Real knock on City's door for Rodri. And one story unconnected to any of the above that still earns its place: Glen Hansard, the Oscar winner who played every Christmas Eve for Dublin's homeless, died in a motorcycle crash at 56. He won an Academy Award for a film shot on almost no money, and every year he went back to the same stretch of pavement where he started.

From the bridge in City Park to a constitutional judge's CV, the heavier half of the day shares one feature: nowhere was information missing. The plan was visible, the ban was two and a half years old, the dates did not match, the Commission's warning was written down. The only thing absent was the step between knowing and acting - the one where somebody stops and does the arithmetic. That is not a technical error. That is a way of working.
