Butel Mayor Darko Kostovski signed the first decisions for financial support for newborns - 5,000 denars for every new baby in the municipality. The measure is part of the social protection program for 2026.

The amount isn't large - 5,000 denars barely covers a box of diapers and a few cartons of milk. But for young families who've just had a child, even a symbolic gesture means someone is thinking of them.

The question is how many families even know they're entitled to this. Municipalities in Skopje have a history of measures that citizens learn about only after they expire. If Butel wants this to actually work, the information has to reach every maternity ward, not just the press release.
