A 2,936-Euro Dress and 51.95-Euro Espadrilles in the Same Month: The Eight Debuts That Explain Letizia's Wardrobe

Eight new pieces in one month. That is how many debuted in Queen Letizia's wardrobe in August, mostly during the family's stay on Mallorca - and the list is more interesting for what is on it than for the number.

It opens with a Carolina Herrera dress in red, for the closing of the film festival on 2 August: an asymmetric neckline, a side zip creating a high slit, price 2,936 euros. A gold handbag and mules debuted with it, while the palm-leaf earrings she already owned.

The second appearance came on 4 August, at the reception for the Balearic Islands government at Marivent Palace: a semi-sheer white dress with linework, signed by Sibylla. The gold sandals with a five-centimetre block heel she had worn before. The earrings are a story of their own - diamonds set in white gold, inspired by 1920s New York, first worn in September 2018, and borrowed in 2023 by Princess Leonor.

The third combination is the one that explains the whole logic. A visit to a foundation with her daughters, a blue-and-white outfit, an ikat-print bag she has had since 2022 - and the only new item is a pair of Menorcan espadrilles in denim colour. Price: 51.95 euros.

That is the difference between this wardrobe and the one you see in fashion round-ups. In the same month, on the same woman, sit a dress worth almost three thousand euros and shoes worth fifty - and the second debuts with the same weight as the first.

The fourth is a private dinner in Palma: a white dress with a rounded neckline, brand unknown, gold flat sandals making their debut, and a raffia bag handmade by Portuguese artisans with floral details in relief, for 455 euros.

What actually carries over from all of this is not a single one of the items. It is the recycling. In a month that counts eight debuts, most elements in the outfits have already been worn - earrings from 2018, sandals from previous seasons, a bag from three years ago.

The institution with the budget never to repeat anything, repeats. That is a move that is neither accidental nor modest - it is knowing that a repeated object reads as taste, and an always-new one as not having any.
