Hristijan Mickoski said the sentence the opposition had been waiting for in an interview on TV Sitel this evening: if SDSM asks for early parliamentary elections, the government is ready to sit down at a leaders' meeting, agree a date and go to the polls.
The condition matters as much as the offer. Mickoski is not announcing elections - he is making them conditional on a request from the other side. „My position and the position of this government is publicly known, and it is that we received a mandate from the citizens for 4 years, and that mandate ends in spring 2028,\" the prime minister said, adding that a caretaker government is still in place, which means the political government's term would end around the close of 2027.
An offer that costs nothing as long as nobody accepts it
„If the opposition asks for early parliamentary elections, then we as a government have always agreed to sit down at a leaders' meeting, agree a date and go to early parliamentary elections. We will not run away, of course,\" Mickoski said.
The rhetoric is familiar and works in two directions at once. To the public it sounds like confidence - no running away, we are ready any time. To the opposition it is a ball thrown across: if you do not ask for elections, it means you do not believe you can win. The cost to the man saying the sentence is zero for as long as the other side declines to pick up the glove.
And here comes the second half of the calculation. If the opposition asks for elections and loses them, the government's mandate renews itself with fresh legitimacy. If it does not ask, the government has four years and a quote to reach for every time it is accused of being afraid of the voters.
Why now
The same evening the prime minister also spoke about the EU process, where the tone was considerably more calculated. He judged that „the situation in the world at the moment is fairly complex\" and that the appetite for enlargement may have weakened among European leaders. He pointed to the autumn electoral cycle in Germany and the high polling of the AfD, estimating that such shifts will move the focus towards domestic German questions.
In other words: for the thing the campaign promised progress on, the explanation is that the world is complicated. For elections - always ready. That is a distribution of confidence worth noting.
And the numbers, of course
Mickoski also claimed that the average wage under his government is growing 70 percent faster per month than under the previous administration, and the old-age pension 325 percent faster on a monthly basis compared with the SDSM and DUI governments.
Those are percentages of the rate of growth, not of the amount itself - a distinction easily lost in a single television sentence, and decisive in a household kitchen. Whether the citizen actually feels that arithmetic is a question no interview will settle. Elections settle it - whenever they happen.
